Last Updated: March 16, 2024.

The Queen of Pentacles is the thirteenth card in the suit of Pentacles (also known as the suit of coins, suit of disks, or suit of rings) and one of the fifty-six suit cards from the minor arcana. In divinatory tarot, the Suit of Pentacles represents the physical, material, financial and earthly aspects of our lives.

Divination practices such as cartomancy can help us make decisions, offer guidance, and help us tune into our intuition when we are at a crossroads in our lives. Understanding the meanings of each tarot card can help you sharpen your interpretative skills so you can get the most out of your readings.

The Queen is the feminine court card of this suit. The queens in the tarot represent emotional, mental and material evolution, nurture and confidence. The Queen of Pentacles is the queen of the material world; our home, finances, food and worldly pleasures.

In this article, we will discuss the meanings of the Queen of Pentacles in various tarot reading contexts as well as the different symbols and nuances that can be found within this court card.

Pictorial Symbolism in the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck

The artworks from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck contain deeper esoteric meanings that tarotists love to decipher. The Queen of Pentacles card is depicted as Queen sitting on an ornate stone throne, surrounded by flowers and plants.

She wears a long beautiful robe and crown, symbolizing her status and wealth. Her throne and dress highlight her position of power, but she sits looking downward, she is more focused on what she has, what is right in front of her, than on making sure she appears powerful.

She holds a single gold coin gently with both hands, giving it all her attention like a mother and her child. Her background is full of plants and wildlife, including a rabbit by her feet, symbolising abundance, fertility and nature.

Queen of Pentacles as Timings / Timeframes

Tarot timing involves assigning precise timeframes or durations to the events and transitions indicated by the tarot cards in a reading. Personally, I use the tarot decan wheel, an astrologically-based method that aligns each Minor Arcana card with a distinct segment of the zodiac calendar.

Based on that, I determined the timing of the Queen of Pentacles to be from December 13 to January 9.

What does the reversed Queen of Pentacles mean in the Tarot?

Pulling the reversed Queen of Pentacles can be a sign of Insecurity and acting out of alignment. This may mean you have an imbalance between your home and work life – you may also be caring too much about and looking after other people when really right now you need to be focusing that compassion towards yourself.

Try to allow more flow into your life, don’t try to force everything. Sometimes one area of your life will need more attention than others. You’re never going to be perfectly balanced, but try to keep an awareness of this and adjust accordingly.

When pulled in the reversed position, the Queen of Pentacles is associated with self-reflection, imbalance, and insecurity.

What does the reversed Queen of Pentacles mean in a love reading?

There may be some negative feelings within your relationships, possibly resentment or that you are giving care to someone who is unable to reciprocate.

If you are in a relationship it is likely there is an imbalance here, someone is closed off and unable to open up to this relationship and it is causing concern.

If you are single, the Queen of Pentacles reversed suggests you may have shut yourself off from emotional matters and love interests, perhaps to protect yourself or perhaps because you have other things that need your attention like your career or building a home for yourself. It might be time to allow yourself to open up to more compassion and softness, first to yourself and then to others.

What does the inverted Queen of Pentacles mean in a career reading?

Your work-life balance is basically non-existent. You might be spending so much time on your career or in day-to-day work that your home and family life suffer, and you yourself are neglected, or you are unable to give your career the attention it needs because of your personal commitments.

Sometimes this can’t be helped and we have to just accept the situation and make the best of it, but try to look for ways you can improve this balance so you feel more in control and your life feels more in flow.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Queen of Pentacles tarot card is a powerful symbol of nurturing, providing, and abundance. When this card appears in your reading, it is often a sign that you are in a good place and have the ability to create abundance in your life. You are in a position where you can share and spread that abundance to the people you love.

Despite its association with mysticism and occultism, the tarot has grown to become much more than a simple “fortune-telling” tool. For many tarot practitioners, it is a complex system made of symbolic imagery and psychological considerations (Tarot archetypes for example) that can be used for self-exploration, meditation, and personal transformation.

The 56 lesser arcana cards relate to the day-to-day events of our lives, the more mundane aspects of our existence. Even though that part of the tarot is about the “smaller picture”, it symbolizes the constant choices we make that shape our lives, our characters, and ultimately our destinies.

Have you ever had a reading where the Queen Of Pentacles appeared? What was the outcome? What does that card mean to you personally? How do you interpret this card in your own tarot practice?
