Freyja's Presence: Recognizing Signs She is Calling You

Freyja is a goddess associated with magick, war, fertility, abundance and love in ancient Norse mythology. Some people believe that she may reach out to individuals who are drawn to her or in need of her guidance. We say “some people believe” as a lot of this research for the article is based on unique personal gnosis, or personal experiences and encounters that are unique to them but not always historically documented.

I previously wrote about her for our Freyja tarot spread and ways to connect too. Here are some signs I’ve come across over social media, books and personal descriptions of people’s deity devotional practice associated with this goddess reaching out.

Primroses Blooming; Freyja's Signs In Nature

From random animal sightings to her patron flowers suddenly blooming in unexpected places, Freyja’s presence in your life may manifest in natural occurrences. Primroses are her flowers and they usually appear around her altar or when she wants to reach out. Other signs may be:

Feathers; a sign of magickal protection. If you notice feathers showing up randomly, it could be a sign that Freyja is watching over you and I’d especially confirm this if it were falcon feathers.
Butterflies; a sign of transformation and beauty. Butterflies are said to be emissaries of Freyja, carrying her messages across the land. If you notice butterflies often, it could be a sign that she seeks your attention.
Coin offerings or gifts left on doorsteps; Freyja is generous and known for her wealth so she may be offering you a sign of divine abundance. If you find random coins lying around, take it as a sign of favour and nurturing from the goddess.
Cat hairs or unknown cats becoming curious/friendlier with you. This could be a sign that Freyja is looking out for you and blessing you with her love and warmth. She had a lot of affection for her cats and her boar.
Wild boar or Hildisvíni symbolism; a sacred animal associated with Freyja, wild boar sightings could be a sign of her presence.

These are just some signs that I have personally come across in my research as well as others, yet it’s important to remember that each individual’s practice may vary from person to person. Fever Dreams; Freyja's Signs In Dreams

Freyja being not only a goddess of magick but also of love, lust and fertility, may appear to you in dreams and with dream symbolism nodding towards her. Her signs in dreams could range from vivid fever dreams, to the presence of cats or wild boar, to random but familiar strangers that may show up in your dreams carrying a message. Other signs may be:

Chariots or fast racing; Freyja is known for her wild rides so this could be a sign she’s wanting to take you on a journey.
Seeing yourself in the sky; this may be a sign of your higher-self and soul being called upon to do magick in the spiritual realms.
A celebration of those who have passed on; as the ruler of Fólkvangr, Freyja may be calling out to you in a dream showing those who have passed on dancing and celebrating the afterlife.
Fluid gold; a sign of abundance, the presence of gold in your dreams could be a sign that Freyja is gifting you with her blessings. It can also suggest her support during emotional times, as Freyja herself was known to cry tears of gold. Amber is also associated with Freyja, so the presence of this crystal could also signify her support.
Rune readings; as a goddess of Sídhöttr, a form of Norse magick and seidhr, Freyja could appear to you in dreams with symbols such as runes, where she rules the first aett of the Elder Futhark.

If you felt a sense of familiarity with them even though you’ve never seen them before and see this happening often, it could be Freyja reaching out and speaking back to you. Be open and listen to their signs, for she may be offering you an unexpected surprise.

Spiritual Journey; Freyja's Signs In Your Practice

In your practice, Freyja may offer you signs in both subtle and tangible forms. She is known to be a goddess of creativity, so her signs may be in the form of creative projects or ideas, as well as unexpected opportunities. Other signs may be:

Divination and Rune Readings interest; an unexpected stirring to learn divination and Rune Reading could be a sign that Freyja is guiding you on your journey. She may also repeatedly show up in your tarot readings (as The Empress, The Lovers, The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Star)
Talisman and amulet work; known for her necklace the Brisingamen, Freyja may be calling out to you to attempt amulet and charm work.
Sacred geometry; visions of sacred geometry and patterns in your everyday might be a sign that Freyja is awakening your inner magick.
Shamanism interest; Freyja is often considered a shamanic goddess and her signs may come in the form of taking an unexpected interest in shamanic practices. You may have started to want to use chanting or drumming in your practice more, for example.
Astral projection; if you’ve been feeling like you wanted to explore the astral plane more, this may be Freyja’s sign calling out to you on your journey, as her chariot can take her in and out of the physical realm.
Claircognizance; a feeling that you know things beyond this physical reality may be Freyja showing up and guiding your spiritual journey.
Visions and meditation; Freyja may also appear during your meditation and visions, or as a way to help you unlock doors on the spiritual plane.

Freyja’s signs may come in many forms, so it is important to be open-minded and aware of even the most subtle signs that she may be giving you. If you feel a sense of familiarity or an unexpected stirring in your practice, it could be Freyja’s way of communicating and guiding you on your spiritual journey. Divine Intervention; Freyja Showing Up To Protect You

War, battles, and rescuing the fallen – Freyja does not shy away from hard times and conflict. In fact, she is often seen as an embodiment of courage, strength, and protection. Her signs may come in the form of the following;

A warning in rune readings; if you are getting the same rune readings again and again, this could be Freyja’s way of warning you about something.
A stranger warning you away from something; if you’ve ever been overheard chatting with a friend about plans, and a stranger interjects to warn you away from it, Freyja may be intervening (or sending someone your way) in that moment for your safety.
A stranger standing by you in solidarity in protests; Visions of her in battle are common. A feeling of protection from an unknown force. When you stand up for what you believe in, you may find a fair haired woman in your thoughts, giving you strength and courage. These are all signs that Freyja is protecting you in her own special way. You may even see folks at protests or mosh pits who look like her.
The girl in the bathroom; something most women have encountered after a party or at a concert or a club – you go to the bathroom, feeling some kind of way, and a beautiful stranger hypes you up, empowers you and you leave feeling better. This could be Freyja reaching out to give you strength in a vulnerable time and cheering you on, or connecting you with someone you need to meet. Chances are, if you’ve met them, you won’t be able to remember them but you’ll remember how they made you feel.
An apparition or vision; A feeling that someone is protecting you from the shadows, whether you see their face or not. Freyja may come to your aid in a time of need, whether we know it or not. She is a goddess I would trust, for as simple as her magickal ability to foretell events.

So if you have seen her in a vision, or heard her whispering to you in the night, know that she is guarding and guiding you. Skip down to the end on suggestions for what to do next.

A Warm Hand; Understanding Sensory Signals From Freyja

Freyja has a loving and caring energy about her, not necessarily maternal but one vibe of protection and guidance. It may even come in the form of a warm hand reaching out to you as if comforting you, when there is no one else. Here are other ways people have noted they specifically felt her presence;

Sense of Exuberance after a Challenge; Freyja is associated with courage, strength, and determination. If you feel an overwhelming sense of joy or exhilaration after completing a challenge or accomplishing a goal, it may be a sign of Freyja’s presence.
Scents of Lavender, Rose, Primrose, etc; Freyja is associated with love, fertility, and beauty. If you suddenly smell the sweet aroma of flowers like lavender, rose, or primrose, it may be an indicator she’s here.
Cosy up to Cats; Freyja is associated with cats, and some believe that if you suddenly feel drawn to cats or find yourself surrounded by them, it may be a sign to connect.
Love of Music; Freyja is also associated with music, particularly with singing, drumming and chanting. If you suddenly feel drawn to music, especially singing or chanting, it may be a sign of her presence.

Sense of Empowerment: Freyja is a powerful goddess who is associated with empowerment, particularly for women. It may be her if you suddenly feel a sense of empowerment or feel inspired to take charge of your life.

Traits That Freyja Favours In Devotees & Companions

While interpretations of her preferences may differ, the following traits are commonly associated with Freyja:

Passion: Freyja is a goddess known for her intense passions and desires. She favors individuals who are passionate about life, love, and their pursuits. Those who approach their endeavors with enthusiasm and fervor are likely to resonate with her energy.
Sensuality: As a goddess of love and beauty, Freyja appreciates individuals who embrace their sensual nature. She favors those who have a healthy relationship with their bodies, enjoy physical pleasures, and celebrate their own sensuality.
Independence: Freyja is a fiercely independent goddess, often associated with personal sovereignty. She values individuals who are self-reliant, assertive, and unafraid to express their individuality. Those who embody independence and are comfortable in their own skin are likely to find favor with her.
Courage: Freyja is a warrior goddess, known for her bravery and fierceness. She favors individuals who display courage in the face of adversity, stand up for their beliefs, and are willing to take risks. Those who embody inner strength and fearlessness may attract her attention, especially those who speak up for injustices and harm.
Emotional Depth: Freyja is associated with a wide range of emotions, including love, longing, and grief. She favors individuals who are in touch with their emotions, capable of deep emotional connections, and willing to explore the complexities of the human heart.

In terms of the type of people Freyja works with, she is often associated with those involved in matters of love, relationships, and sexuality. She may particularly resonate with individuals who practice forms of magic related to love spells, attraction, and enhancing personal charisma. Artists, musicians, and poets who express their creativity through themes of love and passion may also find themselves drawn to Freyja’s energy.

Freyja is a goddess who embraces diversity and inclusivity. She is known to work with people of all genders and sexual orientations, even those not depicted as human (she herself is Vanir). While she is associated with the Norse pantheon, Freyja’s energy extends beyond cultural boundaries, and she may be approached and honored by individuals from various spiritual paths who connect with her essence.

As with any deity, approach Freyja with respect and sincerity, allowing for personal experiences and interpretations to unfold in your relationship with her. Which leads to the final section…

The Presence of Freyja; The Invitation to Learn More

For most folks, it is the feeling of a sudden pull or interest in learning more about Freyja, her mythology, and her associations. It’s really that simple – there’s no hidden agenda. So if that is what you are feeling intuitively called to explore whilst on your witchcraft journey, please do so (if you are open to it).

It’s important to remember that these are all just a few examples and that everyone’s experience is unique. Some people may not experience any of these signs, while others may have a completely different experience with her that I’ve not been able to list for you.

If you feel drawn to Freyja or have any questions, it is recommended to do further research and learn more about her and then respectfully reach out if you feel comfortable, and ask permission with her to start a conversation, especially to see if a relationship is what you’d both like. If you don’t want to or feel uncomfortable, then it is not necessary, and this is something that just keeps your journey interesting, to say the least!
