A Beginner's Guide To Witchy Aesthetics
Last Updated: October 25, 2024
What is a witchy aesthetic?
A witchy aesthetic is a style that amplifies elements of witchcraft and magick, drawing inspiration from different aspects of nature, spirituality, and mysticism. It is not limited to one specific look or set of beliefs, but rather encompasses various interpretations and expressions of the magickal world.
The idea of a witchy aesthetic can be traced back to ancient civilizations where it was believed that individuals possessed supernatural powers to control nature. These people were often seen as healers, herbalists, and spiritual figures in their communities. Yet with the rise of Christianity and other dominant religions, this perception shifted towards fear and persecution.
The Malleus Maleficarum, a book published in the 15th century, fueled the witch hunts and further demonized those who were seen as practicing witchcraft. This stigma and fear surrounding witches continued for centuries, leading to their representation in popular culture as ugly, wart-ridden, old women with malicious intentions.
In recent years, yes, there has been a resurgence of interest in witchcraft and paganism, and with it comes the rise of the witchy aesthetic. Thanks to social media, pinterest… instagram and the like, it is now seen as a way to reclaim power and embrace our connection to nature and our spirituality.
We dress to empower ourselves, our lives and our magick.
A witchy aesthetic then is not just a cute moon print dress then – it’s lots of plants and the scent of patchouli incense in our garden spaces, it’s celestial prints in our bedrooms from gold accents and deep navies, and it’s a herbs upside down drying and a blender in the kitchen designated to midnight margaritas.
What is witchy style?
A witchy style really depends on what type of witch you mean. An astrology loving witch may have a style steeped in celestial prints and symbols, while an herbalist witch may gravitate towards earthy tones and natural fabrics.
Some common elements of a witchy style include:
- Earthy colour palette: Think browns, greens, and deep jewel tones inspired by nature.
- Flowy silhouettes: Loose-fitting dresses, skirts, and tops that allow for movement and comfort.
- Natural materials: Fabrics like linen, cotton or wool that feel connected to the earth.
- Witchy symbols: This can range from pentacles to celestial symbols to phases of the moon.
- Layering: A key component of any witchy wardrobe is layering different textures and patterns for a mystical vibe.
- Mixed prints: Mixing patterns and prints adds depth and dimension to a witchy outfit.
- Jewelry: Adornments such as crystal necklaces, moon phase earrings, and statement rings add a touch of magick to any outfit.
Incorporating natural materials, symbols, and colors into clothing allows individuals to express their beliefs and connect with nature and their spirituality on a deeper level. But it’s not limited to looking one set way; Florence Welch and Stevie Nicks look very different to Lynn Gunn and Romy Flores.
What is witchy decor called?
You can call it witchy decor, witchy aesthetic, witchcore or even cottagecore. These terms are often used interchangeably, but they all encompass similar concepts and styles. Witchy decor is inspired by nature, magick, and the mystical world. It typically includes earthy elements such as dried herbs and flowers, crystals, candles, and natural materials like wood or stone.
Some common features of witchy decor include:
- Botanicals: Dried herbs, flowers, and plants are a staple in any witchy home.
- Candles: Whether for ambience or ritual purposes, candles play a significant role in witchy decor. If you’re not allowed
- Crystal collections: Crystals are believed to have healing properties and are highly valued in many spiritual practices.
- Natural elements: Incorporating natural materials like wood, stone, and feathers adds an earthy and mystical touch to any space.
- Altars: Many witches have personal altars or sacred spaces in their homes where they can connect with their spirituality and perform rituals. It may be a windowsill shelf, a bookshelf, a dedicated table, or even part of your garden.
- Mystical symbols: Just as with witchy fashion, symbols like pentacles, crescent moons, and other celestial objects can be found in witchy decor. I love anything tarot printed!
Witchy decor is not limited to a specific style or aesthetic; it can incorporate elements from bohemian, gothic, vintage, or even modern design. The key is to create a space that feels personal and magickal to the individual and their life and practice.
How to be witchcore?
Witchcore is a variance on witchy aesthetic, and involves the music element much like Punk involves punk rock music too. Witchcore artists like DeathbyRomy, Roniit, Kalandra, Florence + the Machine, and CASHFORGOLD, all add a variety of influence on the genre, and include their own music traversing genres of pop, rock, electronic and indie.
In terms of fashion and style, witchcore is characterized by its dark, earthy tones such as black, brown, and deep greens. It also incorporates elements of nature such as floral prints, lace, leather, crystal tones and velvet. Accessories like chokers, layered necklaces with crystal pendants, wide-brimmed hats, and chunky boots are also common in witchcore fashion.
Some ideas for a witchcore lifestyle and genuine aesthetic include:
- Spend time outdoors and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Collect plants and crystals to use in your decor or for rituals.
- Incorporate mystical symbols into your home decor, whether it be through posters, artwork, or even items like tarot cards or rune stones.
- Experiment with different styles and aesthetics to create a unique and personal witchy fashion sense. Don’t be afraid to mix elements from gothic, bohemian, vintage, and modern styles.
- Connect with other witchcore enthusiasts through social media platforms or local meet-ups. Share inspiration and ideas with each other, innovate and lift each other up.
- It could include practicing rituals, meditation, divination, or any other form of spiritual practice that resonates with you.
Being witchcore is not about adhering to a specific set of rules or guidelines – intuitively let the music influence your decisions.
How can I look more witchy?
There are many ways to incorporate witchy elements into your appearance and style. Here are a few tips to help you achieve a more witchy look:
- Indulge for dark, earthy tones: As mentioned before, black, brown, and deep greens are commonly associated with witchcore fashion. Incorporate these colours into your wardrobe through clothing items like flowy dresses or skirts, chunky knit sweaters, and leather jackets.
- Layer patterns and textures: Mix different patterns and textures in your outfits to create a unique and visually interesting look. For example, pair a lace top with a floral skirt or layer multiple necklaces of varying lengths for a bohemian touch.
- Accessorize with witchy elements: You can incorporate witchy elements into your accessories by wearing crystal jewelry, a wide-brimmed hat, or carrying a tarot deck as a purse. These small touches can add an extra touch of magic to any outfit.
- Experiment with makeup: Dark, smoky eye looks and bold lip colours are commonly seen in witchcore fashion. I love a blue lip, personally. Don’t be afraid to play around with different makeup looks and find what makes you feel the most mystical.
- Incorporate natural materials: Witchcraft is all about connecting with nature, so incorporating natural materials like cotton, linens, feathers, and crystals into your outfits can give off a more earthy and witchy vibe.
What would a real witch wear?
A real witch wears whatever they want. Whether she, him, they/them or other – in your witchcraft comfort, let it feed through for your main wardrobe. I would say that “real” witches will be practical – so no flowing sleeves when working with candle magick, for example. I know that if I’m going to be outside in nature, my outfit will be weather-friendly (or nature-site friendly, like if it’s going to be windy or overcast I’d be layered). My shoes would be walk-worthy. What I wear on any given day depends on my mood and the vibe I’m feeling, which might change by the hour here in wet England.
However, if you want to incorporate more witchy elements into your wardrobe, here are a few ideas:
- Long flowy skirts or dresses in dark earthy colours such as black, green, or purple.
- Layering with earthy tones like browns, greens, and rusts.
- Incorporating natural materials like leather, cotton, linen, and wool.
- Mixing textures and patterns such as lace, velvet, floral prints with stripes or plaid.
- Accessorizing with statement jewellery such as chunky rings or pendants with mystical symbols.
- Adding a touch of mystique with scarves, hats, or capes in dark colours and interesting textures.
There is no one way to look witchy – it’s all about finding what makes you feel empowered and connected to your own spiritual path. And don’t forget to have fun with it! Experimenting with different styles and incorporating elements of witchcraft into your wardrobe can be a form of self-expression and creativity. So let your fashion reflect it! Whether you prefer cozy grunge vibes or elegant gothic looks, let your intuition guide you towards what makes you feel real witchy!
How to dress witchy goth?
For me, I’d go more “Morticia Addams” than “Wednesday Addams”. With those suggestions from above, think more of the direction you want to go in. Do you want to be more Helena Bonham Carter or more Christina Ricci? Both are valid options, but play with different elements, play with what resonates with you. Some additional tips for achieving a witchy goth aesthetic could include:
- Experimenting with dark makeup looks, such as bold black eyeliner or deep berry lipstick.
- Incorporating statement pieces like corsets, pentagrams or mesh tops into your wardrobe.
- Adding a touch of vintage clothing to mix in some old-world vibes. Antique jewellery used as talismans would look gorgeous as part of this.
- Playing with asymmetrical cuts and layered textures to add depth to your outfit.
- Feel free to add charms to your boots; either the laces, zippers or brand tags like on Docs.
- Make the most of great brands like Church of Sanctus, Rogue + Wolf, Disturbia, Killstar and Mary Wyatt.
There is no right way to dress like a witchy goth. It’s all about finding what makes you feel confident and connected to your inner witch!
How to dress like an everyday witch?
Not all witches dress in dark colours and gothic styles. Some may prefer a more casual and everyday look that still incorporates elements of witchcraft. Here are some tips for achieving an everyday witch aesthetic:
- Start with comfortable basics like flowy skirts, loose tops, and cozy cardigans.
- Accessorize with statement jewelry, such as crystal pendants or moon phase earrings.
- Incorporate nature-inspired prints or patterns into your outfit, like floral or animal prints.
- Add layers of scarves or shawls to add texture and depth to your look.
The key is to incorporate small touches of the mystical into your daily wardrobe while staying true to your personal style. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different pieces to create your own unique everyday witch outfit. Remember, it’s all about embracing your inner magic! So find what makes you feel confident and empowered, and let that shine through in your fashion choices. Whether you prefer a more gothic style or a casual everyday look, there are endless possibilities for dressing like an everyday witch. So have fun experimenting, witch! ✨🔮🌙
