The Clairs - The Different Psychic Abilities Guide

Last Updated: July 25, 2023

Witches often describe their magick as “empathy” or a “cunning”. This refers to the ability to understand and connect with the energies of the universe. By connecting with these energies, witches are able to connect with them in order to cause change in their environment. Through spellwork, potions, charms, invocations, or other rituals, they use this connection to make things happen. And sometimes, these abilities appear naturally without ever having been worked upon.

These are referred to as “the clairs”. It’s what we would blanket term call “psychic”. Shall we dive into them?

What Are The Different Clairs?

From the Latin for “clear” and French for “bright” and “light”, these are the psychic senses like clear hearing, clear knowing, and clear feeling. Clear hearing gives witches the ability to hear spirit guides, angels, and other metaphysical beings. Clear knowing is a type of intuition that aids with future events, such as knowing it is a sunny day but there will be a storm later, without having seeing the weather reports. And with clear feeling, witches can connect with the energy in any situation and get a sense of what it means – all of these you see portrayed in the media and in books, but there are real witches and real people out there with these abilities whether they wish for them or not. Let’s go through what each clair is, and check for signs you may too also have clairabilities.

Clairvoyance: “Clear Seeing”

A person who suddenly has vivid visions or images of an upcoming event or a distant location, providing accurate information that you couldn’t have known through ordinary means or “pattern recognition”.

Clairvoyance is sometimes referred to as “Remote Viewing” or “Second Sight.” Edgar Cayce, also known as “The Sleeping Prophet,” was renowned for his ability to provide detailed and accurate readings while in a trance state. He accurately predicted future events, diagnosed health conditions, and provided insights into people’s past lives.

Clairaudience: “Clear Hearing”

You hear distinct voices, sounds, or messages that others around them cannot perceive. You may receive guidance or information from the spirit realm or communicate with entities beyond the physical realm. Clairaudience is also known as “Psychic Hearing” or “Spiritual Hearing.” Theresa Caputo, popularly known as the “Long Island Medium,” is a well-known clairaudient. She claims to hear messages from departed loved ones and delivers them to the living, providing comfort, closure, and healing.

Clairsentience: “Clear Sensing” or “Clear Feelings”

These are individuals experience strong intuitive feelings or emotions about a person, place, or situation without any apparent logical reason. You may sense someone’s energy or emotions, picking up on subtle vibrations or atmospheres. Clairsentience is sometimes called “Empathy” or “Psychic Feeling.” Judith Orloff, a psychiatrist and empath, is known for her work in understanding and teaching about energy sensitivity and emotional intuition. She helps people navigate their empathic abilities and use their sensitivities as a gift.

Claircognizance: “Clear Knowing”

A person who suddenly receives knowledge, insights, or understanding about a specific topic or situation without any prior information or research. You may have a strong sense of certainty and conviction about the information you receive. Claircognizance is also known as “Psychic Knowing” or “Divine Knowing.” Doreen Virtue, a former psychologist turned spiritual author and teacher, is known for her claircognizance. She has written numerous books on angels, divine guidance, and spiritual topics, providing insightful and intuitive teachings. She however turned her back on her spiritual community when she decided to connect only with Christianity and focus in that direction, belitting fans and supporters of her original work for a long time.

Clairalience: “Clear Smelling”

You detect scents or smells associated with a particular person, object, or place. These scents may be subtle or even unusual, triggering memories or impressions for you or the person experiencing them. Clairalience can be referred to as “Psychic Smelling” or “Spiritual Smelling.” Dominique Ropion, a famous French perfumer, is known for his exceptional ability to create scents, and this talent allowed him to perceive and blend various aromatic notes, resulting in the creation of iconic fragrances. Andrew Huberman runs a podcast with a fascinating breathwork series. His clairalience has allowed him to detect the smell of fear and other emotions.

Clairgustance: “Clear Tasting”

These individuals taste distinct flavors or sensations in their mouth without any physical stimulus. These tastes may be associated with specific energies, emotions, or messages. Clairgustance is sometimes called “Psychic Tasting” or “Spiritual Tasting.” Heston Blumenthal, a renowned British chef who is a complete magician in the kitchen for multisensory experiences, is known for his innovative approach to cooking and taste. He has the ability to combine flavors in unique and unexpected ways, creating unforgettable culinary experiences. He is able to recreate dishes for people based on client’s familial history with just a taste of an ingredient, which is some kind of magick in itself. He’s known to have had interviews where he gets a taste in his mouth just from speaking to someone about their lives, which is indicative of clairgustance.

Clairtangency: “Clear Touching” or “Clear Feeling”

This is someone who can gather information or impressions by touching an object or person. You may receive insights, emotions, or images related to the object’s history or the person’s experiences. Clairtangency is also known by “Psychometry” or “Object Reading.” Allison DuBois, the inspiration behind the TV series “Medium,” is a psychic medium who has the ability to touch objects or people and receive information. She has worked with law enforcement agencies to solve crimes using her clairtangency skills.

Clairprognostience: “Clear Knowing of Future Events”

This looks like those individuals who have knowledge or foresight about future events or outcomes. You may accurately predict specific details before they occur, providing evidence of your clairprognostience. Clairprognostience can be referred to as “Precognition” or “Future Sight.” Nostradamus, a French astrologer and seer, is famous for his prophetic writings that contain predictions about future events. His clairprognostience is believed to have foreseen significant historical events and natural disasters.
