Pictorial Symbolism in the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck

The artworks from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck contain deeper esoteric meanings that tarotists love to decipher. The Page of Wands tarot card presents a well-dressed individual standing tall and strong with their singular wooden staff in hand. Their outfit comprises a salamander design, with the salamander being typically known for their transformational qualities, and they stand amongst a dry and barren land.

This may be suggesting that there are yet to be any fruits of their labour, so this is a person that is full of ideas, that is just yet to be put into action. But this individual stands boldly, almost proud, and incredibly confident. They are enthusiastic and the barren land around them isn’t doing anything to knock their optimism.

The Page of Wands as a person

As a personality archetype, the Page of Wands represents someone that is either quite young or childlike in their nature, that will be full of buzzing passion and optimism.

To them, life is absolutely grand, and they have a thousand and one things they absolutely want to do, but will also typically be the type to act now and think later – often resulting in them facing consequences for their actions.

However, they will typically be someone that is loved by the masses for their bubbly and confident ways, and you might find them quite gossipy and love to spill the tea with.

The Page of Wands as advice

With this Page being quite an inexperienced individual, the card may be advising you to take steps towards being open to learning, to educate yourself further, and to learn as much as you can right now.

The experience offers a lot in the way of learning, and you can never have enough life experience that’s for sure. Be a sponge for information for the time being for who knows where this will lead.

It’s a big ol’ yes, yes, yes, card within the minor arcana! The Page’s lively and fearless attitude is what makes this card a ‘yes’ card in the grand scheme of things, as it offers a sense of fun, playfulness, and freedom to explore new and exciting ideas. The Page likes bounding forward confidently with their creative cap fixed atop of their head! So this can-do attitude offers a resounding ‘yes’ to you.

Below are some of my interpretations, as an experienced tarot practitioner, based on different types of questions:

Querent question: “Will I get the job?”

The Page of Wands is usually seen as a good omen to receive in relation to a new job/career! The Page is all about starting a new venture and progressing forward, so it’s looking highly likely that that will be happening real soon for you – especially if you’re putting in the legwork required (interviews, etc).

Querent question: “Is this new person in my life good for me?”

Card interpretation: Overall, why not! The Page of Wands doesn’t carry with them a lot of red flags in relation to connections and friendships, so it’s no doubt that this new individual will just be bringing along with them some glorious sparks and will inject some much-needed playfulness into your life! You’ll most likely find this person a joy to be around, your only warning may be to not get caught up in how they can sometimes rush ahead without thinking – this can get them into trouble! They’re just a very excitable person who loves life, so they’ll no doubt always be putting a smile on your face.

Querent question: “Will I achieve my current goals?”

Card interpretation: In relation to goals, and achieving what we’re going after, the Page of Wands can signify that it’s time we moved on to the next stage in order to progress. So for yourself, you may need to assess what you next need to do in order to put yourself even closer to the finishing line, you may even find this sparks a new sense of fun and excitement within you! The Page may be asking you to step up and explore, learn, and gain experience, and this will help propel you forward.

Querent question: “Should I start my own business?”

Card interpretation: The Page of Wands very much favours new ventures, especially business-related ones. So, if your focus is to start a new business, this Page is telling you to absolutely go for it, this is very much a favourable time for you to do so! But as always, the Page reminds you to not rush ahead blindly, to make sure you’re being confident and clear with each step you take, and you should find yourself being successful somewhere down the line! Make use of all those ideas that you have bubbling away in your mind as right now you very much have the enthusiasm required to take the action you need to.

What does the reversed Page of Wands mean in the Tarot?

The reversed Page of Wands can typically suggest one of two things, on one hand, you may be feeling the desire to be creative, yet are lacking any actual creative ideas, or you at least have no clue on how to implement how you’re feeling into reality – and you’re overall just being rather indecisive about it because you simply just don’t know, and this has taken its toll on your motivation level.

You may be able to sit and be with your thoughts and eventually you’ll work out what it is that you need to do, but you may also have tried this before and it led nowhere, especially if you tried your hand at a few things that lead you back to square one as no real progress was made.

This can hit hard when you feel your own growth is being slowed or negatively impacted.

Reverse Page of Wands

When pulled in the reversed position, the Page of Wands is linked with impatience, procrastinating, childish, no confidence, pessimistic, bad news, and immaturity.

What does the reversed Page of Wands mean in a love reading?

If you’re in a relationship, then this reversed Page could possibly mean that your partner may have seemed very fun and exciting to begin with, but now the rose-tinted glasses have come off and you’re seeing them for who they truly are, and you may be wondering just how compatible the two of you even are.

If this is the case then it’s up to you if you wish to explore the relationship more to see if you just need a bit of fun and playfulness between you to spark things off again, or if it’s time to call it quits and walk away; not everything is meant to be, and that’s okay.

If you’re single, then this card can mean that you’re not putting enough effort into your love life or you are being too fearful to try, and this will especially be showing if you’re going out and about on dates and attempting to meet people – and naturally, this can very much put people off.

I know it can be hard but it’s time to try and find your enthusiasm for love again.

What does the inverted Page of Wands mean in a career reading?

You know what you want but you have no idea how to get there, and you also lack the determination to even get started right now. You’re not feeling very enthusiastic about your work life in general and naturally, this may be noticed at work by your higher-ups, so be mindful of that.

You don’t want to be the reason your own career progression gets halted; even temporarily. Whilst you’re working on yourself or taking some time with decisions, ask for support from those in a more mature position to yourself for guidance and motivation.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Page of Wands tarot card is a powerful symbol of good news, feeling cheerful, fun, active, excitement, and confidence. When this card appears in your reading, it is often a sign that you have excited energy around you, that it’s a message of good news, and maybe now is the time to start your travel plans with renewed excitement.

Despite its association with mysticism and occultism, the tarot has grown to become much more than a simple “fortune-telling” tool. For many tarot practitioners, it is a complex system made of symbolic imagery and psychological considerations (Jungian archetypes for example) that can be used for self-exploration, meditation, and personal transformation.

The 56 lesser arcana cards relate to the day-to-day events of our lives, the more mundane aspects of our existence. Even though that part of the tarot is about the “smaller picture”, it symbolizes the constant choices we make that shape our lives, our characters, and ultimately our destinies.
